btw, now when you post here you have a few minutes to delete it if you typed a link wrong, or fucked up [b[bold tags[b/], or just want to rephrase what you were trying to say. I would allow you to edit it instead of just deleting it and trying again, but that would involve extra work, and I'm actually a pretty lazy person. 10/14/2005-7:32pm
apple is really trying to push video chatting and downloading music and videos. both of these require broadband. i mean they went so far as to build a video camera into the new iMac. 10/14/2005-2:35pm
meh, no matter what its worth the money to have porn on tap 10/14/2005-8:04am
so it's settled then, if you don't have friends you don't need broadband... er, if you have broadband you don't need friends... no wait, it's... if your friends have broadband, you just need a laptop. 10/13/2005-6:35pm
they do if you want to send any of that stuff (except dvd's) to your friends 10/13/2005-12:34pm
plenty of the things that make Macs so attractive (like video editing -> making DVDs, photo collections, iTunes/iPod interface) have little to do with having broadband though. And for a large chunk of people, it's not worth paing twice as much or more for broadband to read msnbc.com and check your e-mail. 10/13/2005-12:24pm
i simply don't see the modem thing as an issue, since you can have one built in if you want. as for firewire, it appears that you're right, it's not even supported. that sucks for older mac users, sorry dudes. i know the recent ipods only came with USB, I don't know when they switched over from supplying both to only supplying USB. 10/13/2005-11:53am
i would agree that it sucks to take a modem out of a laptop, since it's plenty useful when travelling, BUT on a desktop, how many people really drop the requisite cash on a new mac and don't have broadband these days? 10/13/2005-11:01am
Apple can't afford to abandon firewire outright, 1394 is simply the digital video standard. If they got rid of it, they may as well stop selling FinalCut as well. My guess is they took firewire support out of the new ipods to help trim down the chipset. 10/13/2005-8:35am
ahh! beaten... damnit... how often does that happen here? anyway, modems are plenty mainstream, just because everyone you know has broadband doesn't mean everyone has broadband. 3.5" disks were also still in pretty hefty use when apple axed those from its systems... and CRT monitors... the whole "forcing X on the people" was a joke referring to taking features you don't want people to use anymore out of what you make, and selling them as over-priced add-ons. 10/13/2005-8:30am
Actually, my 4th gen iPod came with a firewire cable and a usb cable. I got it less than a year ago. What he means is, it doesn't appear the latest ipods even support 1394 anymore. 10/13/2005-8:18am
and i agree modems are not mainstream anymmore and suck, so if you need one pay the cash to add it, otherwise it helps keep the cost down for the rest of us. 10/13/2005-8:15am
my 4G ipod came with both, and if you look at the system requirements they only support USB now. 10/13/2005-8:14am
the previous ipods didn't come with firewire either, but you can buy a cable separately. as for forcing people to use broadband, you can select to add a modem when you purchase the machine, but let's face it, modems don't fit into the apple experience or strategy at all 10/13/2005-7:32am
they are also cramming usb 2.0 down people throats, no firewire on the new ipods, which screws people with slightly older powerbooks over 10/12/2005-2:50pm
